1862 June 28 Staunton, Va.

[from the diary of Joseph Addison Waddell civilian employee of the Quartermaster Dept.]

Saturday, June 28, 1862.
Several dispatches at 10 o’clock last night, stating
that the enemy had been driven back seven miles,
and our troops still pursuing. A dispatch to-day
says the battle is still going on, that we have cap-
tured a large number of prisoners and many small
arms. Cannonading heard again this morning.
