[from the diary of Lt. John Tyler of the Letcher Artillery]
 
May 10th  Very warm & sultry.  A fire
occurred in the brush within a short
distance of our battery and spread
very rapidly the wind fortunately
blowing it away from us.  Col Mars-
-hall’s regiment was turned out
and after hard work at last suc-
-ceeded in stopping it.  The Capt be-
ing absent I ordered the drivers to
gear their horses in case the wind
should shift and it became nesces-

-sary  to move our pieces.  To day I
was Battery officer of the day.
